About Me

After a fulfilling 30-year career with the US Forest Service, I transitioned from public service to part-time leadership coaching. My journey has taken me managing small teams to leading national-scale programs, but the two common threads have always been relationships and leadership. I saw firsthand how fostering trust with the public, peers, employees, and partners is the most effective way to lead. Having coached mid-career leaders since 2015 and earned my Associate Certified Coach credential in 2024, I focus on the power of relationships and effective communications in leadership development. Through Spring Creek Coaching, I continue to be an advocate for leadership development.Outside of coaching, I enjoy spending time running or hiking trails in the mountains, with occasional river trips in the summer time. During the summer I volunteer as a Trail Ambassador with the Missoula Parks & Recreation Department. My wife, Karen, and I live in Missoula, Montana and our son, Bryce, is an engineering major at Purdue University.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the duration of a coaching session?
Sessions typically last 60 minutes, are conducted virtually, and can be scheduled around your busy calendar.
How are your coaching sessions structured?
My style of coaching uses inquiry and reflection to help you explore your options and take purposeful action. We begin by identifying the values that drive your leadership style. We’ll identify a primary objective for our work together and establish milestones to evaluate your progress. Each time we meet, you bring the topic that matters most—whether it’s a milestone on your long-term path or an immediate hurdle. Through purposeful inquiry, we’ll examine the situation and your options, always anchoring back to why this work is important to you. I’ll be there to listen, reflect, ask good questions, and occasionally challenge you to see beyond your current assumptions. Before we finish, you’ll commit to specific actions, ensuring you leave our coaching session with a clear, empowered path forward.
Do you offer a free initial consultation?
Yes, I offer a free 30-minute initial consultation to ensure we are a good fit.
How is coaching different from mentoring?
Mentoring offers guidance and advice to navigate known paths. In contrast, my style of coaching uses inquiry and reflection to help you explore your options and take purposeful action.
How are sessions scheduled?
I use an online scheduling tool that allows you to schedule coaching sessions that are mutually convenient for both of us. Clients can schedule sessions one at a time or several sessions months in advance. Sessions are an hour long. Generally, time slots are available from 10am to 5pm Mountain time Monday through Friday, but we can make arrangements if you need to schedule a session outside my normal working hours.
I’m a Federal employee, how would my agency pay for coaching?
To streamline agency procurement and minimize administrative paperwork, Spring Creek Coaching, LLC accepts payment via Government Purchase Cards (GPC). I will provide your GPC cardholder a description of services for their records. Packages are billed as a single, flat-fee commercial professional development program, and a complete invoice is provided prior to your first session. This simplifies the administrative logging for your cardholder and ensures we can kick off our first session within 30 days of payment authorization.
Do you offer discounted rates for employees of non-profits?
Yes, rates for employees of non-profits are negotiable.
Why should I select you as my coach?
From leading small teams to providing leadership at the Forest Service’s national office, my career has been defined by effective leadership. Today, I translate that experience into a coaching practice that centers on your priorities and turns insightful conversations into tangible progress. My coaching philosophy is “to assist clients in discovering their unique path to becoming confident and effective leaders.” I accomplish this by understanding your values, asking good questions, reflecting back what I hear, sharing honest feedback, and holding you accountable for taking actions that you identify.
